Since The Dance Awards started in New York summer 2011, the best dancer winners have had the chance to showcase their winning solo in the concluding “Closing Show” at the end of the week of classes and competition. However this year, there has been a new rule that states that only those that win “Senior Best Dancer” have the opportunity to perform their solo in the closing show. This discourages those who won since they are not allowed to show a large portion of why they won.

These dancers have been perfecting the three minute piece for the majority of the year, and for them to win but not be able to show the audience at the venue, but also watching online is disappointing. Everyone who won should have the opportunity to do their solo one last time. These dancers ranging ages 8 to 18 have put in time and money to get them where they are today, for solo choreography and costume costs, classes at their studio, conventions to qualify for Best Dancer, and the cost of traveling to a nationals.

This new rule stating that only the senior best dancers can show their solo is not fair to the majority of best dancer winners, and could possibly discourage dancers from competing at the dance awards if they are not given the opportunity to perform again.
