To Bravo, NBCUniversal, Vanderpump Rules & Lisa Vanderpump
The United States is currently in a position it has not been in before. We, as a society, are finally coming to grips with the destruction we have caused to Black people in this country for hundreds of years. But of course you all know this.
This petition is about the firing of Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute from Vanderpump Rules for their behavior and actions towards a former castmate. While no one condones this behavior, we also believe their actions were not racially motivated. Recently, those who dislike Ms. Schroeder have created social media accounts, petitions, and have written her sponsors and management team to have her fired. These accounts do not exist for the other 3 cast members who were let go from the show. In this situation, you have sided with the 'internet trolls' when a decision could have been made for all of us to learn from a mistake.
This country, and the rest of the world are finally understanding that bias exists in all of us. To fix systematic racism and to heal, we need to have conversations, educate ourselves, listen, learn, and do better.
The event that took place over two years ago, was not ok. The actions by Ms. Schroeder and Ms. Doute were out of ignorance. But if we have learned anything during these last few weeks, it is that these hard conversations need to be had. Firing these cast members for something that happened years ago, is more harmful than helpful. We all have done and said things in our past that, under a microscope and in sound bites, do not show the best of who we are. And they do not show the growth and experiences we have learned from since these moments were recorded. This could have, and we hope still can be, used to have meaningful conversations about diversity, inclusivity, safety, and privilege. Ms. Schroeder and Ms. Doute have used their platforms to share resources regarding the Black Lives Matter movement, and the current protests happening around this country and the world. They have both stood in solidarity and used their voices to help in whatever ways they could. They have both listened and amplified Black voices so we can all learn and grow together. In the past, they have also raised awareness and worked for LGBTQIA rights.
Many of us are now realizing that we have biases we never knew existed, that some of our actions and words were harmful or hurtful to our friends, neighbors, and communities. Ms. Schroeder and Ms. Doute have recognized this as well and moving forward, it is our hope that Bravo/NBCUniversal re-hire them to show what can be done when those in privileged situations, learn from their mistakes. It is our hope, that Bravo/NBCUniversal give both these women the opportunity and chance to make things right in front of an audience of over 1 million viewers. It is our hope that these women, who reflect the very people in this country and the majority of Bravo viewers, can be given a moment of grace to learn. This is a teachable moment for all of us, and it is a moment Bravo and NBCUniversal can still make right.
When we know better, we do better. – Maya Angelou
