This was my 3rd ICSF, and I agree with Rob that things do seem to be getting worse. At dinner, a woman crawled on the floor next to our table and was begging the people seating right beside me. She was yelled at and physically dragged out of the restaurant. This was the first day I was in town for ICSF 2015 and it didn't improve. I stayed at Hotel Monaco, now known as The Marker. It's next door to The Clift Hotel, an easy 1 block walk from the Hilton, and there was no way to walk without being yelled at by strangers. When we were on the streets near the hotel, I had to have a chaperon and walk with my head down. I love ICSF, but would feel much safer in a friendlier location.
Why not change it to somewhere more central or rotate around the country? Chicago, Denver, etc. There are plenty of locations that are not only safer, but more affordable also.
This is a great conference, and I love the city but do feel the neighborhood has become a bit on the un-safe side. I'm not familiar enough with the city to be able to propose an alternative, but it is certainly an issue that needs to be recognized
Our terrible experience in the neighbourhood last year impacted our decision to not attend this year. Love the conference, hate the location. Unfortunately when I ICSF I don't usually leave the 'hood much, so my overall impressions of SF are terrible.
It is no longer safe in the current location in SF.
