Why this petition matters

In the last few months after the pandemic POC women have been killed and injured just for riding the Toronto Transit Comission.

For the price of a $3.25, POC women are risking their life everyday for the daily task of travel, because the TTC is extremely unsafe for POC women of all ages.

Nyima Dolma, 28, of Toronto, died last week after the attack at Kipling station, near Kipling Avenue and Dundas Avenue West, at about 12:25 p.m. on June 17, 2022. Tenzin Norbu, 33, was arrested nearby and charged with attempted murder. That charge has now been upgraded to first-degree murder - this attack was completely random and senseless. After the attack, police had said a man on the bus poured a liquid substance on the woman and ignited it. Nyima Dolma was a caregiver who had lived a life of service to others," her sister Dawa writes.

This was a senseless murder that happened in broad day light on the TTC to a POC women.

And just a couple months prior to this murder that happened inside of TTC property, another POC women was pushed on the train tracks at Bloor and Yonge Station. Again another random attack on a POC women, that could have been prevented if the TTC was not so negligent and actually took care to transport their paying customers safely.

As mentioned Shamsa Al-Balushi, a 39-year-old woman was pushed onto the subway tracks at Toronto's Bloor-Yonge station. Shamsa Al-Balushi was seriously injured when she was pushed onto the tracks on the evening of April 17, 2022. She survived by pressing herself against the subway platform to avoid being hit by an oncoming train.

The TTC says she is now suing the TTC for negligence after she was pushed onto the tracks at Bloor-Yonge station. In the TTC's statement of defence, the TTC says that Shamsa Al-Balushi “chose to stand close to the edge of the platform and failed to pay due care and attention to her surroundings,” in the moments before she was pushed onto the tracks at the station on April 17. It’s a move the Al-Balushi’s lawyer says is akin to victim-blaming.

The TTC refuses to take any accountability for their negligence, of back to back random attacks and passenger safety in the course of 2022, this is only some of the most recent attacks that have happened to POC women, there are others of elderly POC women that are not even publicized in the news.

Please boycott the TTC if you are a women, and especially if you are POC women until the TTC outlines a plan to actually make the TTC safe.
