The Issue
As a dedicated foreign language educator committed to promoting multilingual education, I am deeply concerned about the Central Board of Secondary Education's (CBSE) recent implementation of the Three Language Formula in schools across India. This new rule mandates that students learn three languages, typically including their regional language, Hindi, and English.
This directive poses several problems for our diverse nation where numerous languages coexist. By forcing a rigid language framework, we risk marginalizing students whose mother tongues are neither Hindi nor English. This approach undercuts the linguistic diversity that is India's strength and overshadows the potential for students to choose international languages that may enrich their global competitiveness.
The rich tapestry of India's diverse languages is a unique asset that should be celebrated, not stifled. Requiring a heavy focus on Hindi limits the flexibility for students to explore other languages, such as French, German, or Spanish, which are increasingly becoming essential in a globalized economy.
Moreover, the policy provides little room for accommodating schools that aim to focus on foreign language education, which is critical for opening global opportunities and enhancing cultural exchange. Students should be able to exercise their right to choose languages that align with their future aspirations and personal interests.
In the interest of providing a well-rounded and flexible educational framework, we propose that CBSE reconsider this policy. We advocate for a language education model that values regional language diversity while allowing choice for an international language, thus fostering true multilingualism.
I urge parents, educators, and policymakers to recognize the need for a more inclusive and dynamic language policy that reflects the aspirations of our diverse student community. Let's stand together to ensure that the educational system nurtures linguistic talents rather than constraining them.
Please sign this petition to call upon the CBSE to revise their Three Language Formula and promote a flexible and inclusive approach to language education in India, paving the way for a multilingual future for all students.
