On the 2nd of June 2017, Barnsley Chronicle published a front page "advertisement" endorsing the Conservative Party for the upcoming election on June the 8th. I and other members of the community are upset and angered over this advertisement as this displays a complete lack of respect for the communities values. In the 1980's, our fathers and grandfathers fought against the Conservative government spear headed by Margaret Thatcher in the infamous 1984/85 strike. This fight led to years of unemployment, starvation and poverty for which Barnsley has never truly recovered.
The endorsement from the Barnsley Chronicle also shows disrespect to the young people of our town who have lived through seven years of cruel austerity measures and an unfair increase to tuition fees.
We understand that the political landscape of our town is changing which displayed itself in the EU referendum result. However what we want from our local tabloid newspaper is fair, unbiased journalism that reflects the values of Barnsley. This most recent headline shows the complete opposite of those things.
From this petition, we want a full apology published on every one of Barnsley Chronicle social media accounts and the front page of next week's edition.
