Russian President, Vladimir V. Putin, recently signed a law banning the adoption of Russian-born children not only to gay couples but also to any couple or single parent living in any country where marriage equality exists in any form. Mr. Putin also signed a law that allows police officers to arrest any person (Russian citizen, tourist, or foreign national) who is suspected of being gay or "pro-gay." This could mean that any Olympic athlete, trainer, reporter, family member or fan who is gay — or suspected of being gay, or just accused of being gay — can go to jail.
The new laws also introduce fines for those who are suspected of spreading "homosexual propaganda" to minors, which may cause a "distorted understanding" that homosexual and heterosexual relations are "socially equivalent." Critics have called the new laws homophobic and so vaguely defined that they will inevitably be used against gays and stir hate crimes in the country.
