Abigail Snyder started this petition to Bowie Residents and Supporters of the Project

We are asking for your support for the new Two-Sheet facility which was approved by the City Council and then revoked. Please read below for more details:

The Bowie Council voted down approving the $21.7 million contract to build the new Bowie Ice Arena on Monday evening, June 3rd.

G. Frederick Robinson, Mayor, mayor@cityofbowie.org – voted to approve

Henri Gardner, Mayro Pro Team & At-Large Councilmember, gardner@cityofbowie.org – voted to not approve

James Marcos, At-Large Councilmember, jmarcos@cityofbowie.org – voted to approve

Michael Esteve, District 1 Councilmember, mesteve@cityofbowie.org – voted to not approve

Dufour Woolfley, District 2 Councilmember, dwoolfley@cityofbowie.org – voted to not approve

Darian Senn-Carter, District 3 Councilmember, dsenn-carter@cityofbowie.org – did not attend

Isaac Trouth, District 4 Councilmember, itrouth@cityofbowie.org – voted to not approve

Phone number for all councilmembers is 301-809-3029.

Not only did they vote down approving the contract but a motion was made by Councilman Dufour Woolfley and approved by the Bowie Council (voting same as above), to let the Bowie residents decide whether or not to build a new rink by a referendum this November during the municipal elections. We understand Gardner, Esteve, Woolfley and Trouth are running for re-election at that time. Robinson and Marcos will not be returning to the council.

The new Bowie Ice Arena has been on the Bowie Council agenda for many years and required several motions by councilmembers which were approved time after time moving the project to the next step. If you aren’t up to date on the Bowie Council meetings and their approvals regarding the new Bowie Ice Arena, I encourage you to review their website www.cityofbowie.org and select City Council. Their website also contains information about the new Bowie Ice Arena under Our Community and select Recreation & Parks.

The Capital Gazette/Bowie Blade has a good archive of articles regarding the new Bowie Ice Arena. Their website is www.capitalgazette.com and search Bowie Ice Arena.

The current Bowie Ice Arena is almost 50 years old and will not last much longer. Although the building is still structurally safe for occupancy and the air quality inside the facility is tested on a regular basis, due to its age there are no guarantees as to how long the facility will be operational. The facility is scheduled to reopen on July 6th.

I’d like to thank Councilman Jimmy Marcos, for his courage to stand on our side and his support and vision for the new Bowie Ice Arena.
