Petition to the Bovina Historical Society

We the undersigned write in response to the letter dated November 15 from Bovina Historical Society to Beatriz Sohni (Bea) concerning the future of Russell’s Store in Bovina Center.
For the past 9½ years, Bea Sohni has managed Russell’s Store in line with Marjorie Russell’s vision - maintaining its authentic role as the town’s general store while also providing a place where people can come for a bite to eat, a coffee to go or a meeting place for conversation and a made to order sandwich. For many Russell’s Store is the heart of the community. It’s not a groovy hipster restaurant or cappuccino bar – nothing against them, but neither of which could replace this essential community establishment.
The energy and environment of Russell’s is directly attributable to Bea. In fact, she is so core to the Russell’s experience often we hear Russell’s being referred to as “Bea’s” — the two have become interchangeable. Losing Bea would be losing a big part of the Russell’s Store tradition.
As a community, we respectfully request that Beatriz Sohni be given a three-year lease agreement to match her financial commitment to the increased rent so that Bea may continue her effective stewardship of Russell’s Store while adhering to the BHS mission of “working toward preserving the history of Bovina.”
