Why this petition matters

Started by Alicia Bysh

Students go to university from across the country and come from all different financial backgrounds and therefore, some trips like the trip in question are not financially inclusive. These trips are at an additional cost to students on top of the already extortionate tuition fees moreover, these are the trips that help compound knowledge and provide experience.

Specifically the trip that has led to this petition is an Environmental Sciences trip to Costa Rica provided by Bournemouth University. The cost is £1880 per student on top of tuition fees and covers ecosystems and conservation. Currently the funding for struggling students from various family types with less financial stability has been cut which creates an inequality within the students that can go.

In addition to this, the university staff went on strike in 2019 & 2020, students sympathise with their reasons however, the money lost when university timetables were dismissed due to lack of staff will still have to be paid back by students. The suggestion is that this money should be used to reduce the overall cost of the trip.

We hope we can gain your support therefore, pushing the university to act.
