EQUAL ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION AT BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY FOR PEOPLE SEEKING REFUGEE PROTECTION IN THE UK
People who have sought refugee protection in the UK do not have equal access to university; most are classed as international students which means that they are charged much higher fees. On top of this, most cannot get a student loan and do not yet have the right to work to earn the money to pay living costs, let alone fees.
The current European refugee crisis is the largest humanitarian disaster in generations. We need everyone to play their part in helping people who’ve fled situations that we cannot even imagine, and help them find safety and rebuild their shattered lives.
Student Action for Refugees (STAR) and the National Union of Students (NUS) have teamed up to change this, and since 2012 they have been campaigning for equal access to go to university for all people seeking refugee protection in the UK. Since 2012 the campaign has proven hugely successful with over 40 universities now offering scholarship, bursaries and fee waivers.
However, there is still so much more to be done in order to ensure that people forced to seek protection in the UK have the same opportunity to continue into higher education.
STAR Bournemouth are calling on Bournemouth University to do their part and to:
- Classify all those seeking refugee status (asylum seekers) as ‘home students’ for fees purposes,
- Offer a minimum of 5 scholarships that cover both study and maintenance costs for those who have come to the UK seeking refugee protection;
- And, publicise their Equal Access policies clearly so that potential students can apply.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that:
“Higher Education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit”
It is our job as a University, as much as it is a country, which prides itself on giving opportunities to those from less fortunate backgrounds, that we take part in upholding our responsibility to give those their basic human rights.
Let’s make an equal access to higher education a reality. We at STAR Bournemouth (Student Action for Refugees(, are here to help each step of the way.
