Stop Boulder County's first Sexually Violent Predator from living in Bar K/Jamestown area

On or after April 27, 2017, Christopher Lawyer (believed to be the first rapist in Boulder County to receive the label of "Sexually Violent Predator," a designation given to people convicted of violent sexual offenses who posses a high risk of re-offending) is set to be released from incarceration from a parole violation to live with his sponsor, his 71 year old godmother who resides by herself in Bar K Ranch.

In 2000, Christoper Lawyer kidnapped a Boulder woman who was delivering newspapers at the Gold Run apartments, forced her into her vehicle and taped her eyes and mouth shut. Lawyer drove the woman to another location, raped her for more than an hour at gunpoint and attempted to make casual conversation afterward. Lawyer pleaded guilty in 2001 to first-degree sexual assault, second-degree assault and misdemeanor menacing in connection with the rape of the newspaper carrier. He was sentenced to 12 years to life in prison and was granted parole in September 2016.

Bar K Ranch is a rural neighborhood outside of Jamestown, CO. Our community is in a rural setting, with houses spaced far apart. We have no cell phone coverage and are surrounded by thousands of acres of National Forest. We are a community of welcoming people, and of single, independent women who live alone. We are a community 30-40 minutes away from law enforcement response. We are a community of families; children and teenagers walk to the school bus stops and play alone in the common spaces and their own yards. We chose to build a life here because of these qualities. We chose to forgo certain securities that are inherent in neighborhoods with smaller lot sizes, more traffic, more connectivity, and fast emergency response times.

Our community is not equipped to support a Sexually Violent Predator who is in the state of rehabilitation the Christopher Lawyer is in. By putting Christopher Lawyer in this situation, we are not setting him up for success. This is neither a responsible situation for Christopher Lawyer, nor for our community. Christopher was granted parole in September 2016 because he had a supportive home to go to, his mother's home in Boulder, close to the support system he needs. A home with his 71 year old godmother in rural Bar K is not a supportive home.

Please consider the safety and well-being of our rural neighborhood, as well as the reckless and dangerous situation that is created by placing Christopher Lawyer in a home in Bar K Ranch.
