This fire started in July and has been raging through the Kgalagadi Tronsfrontier Park on the Botswana side, in the Mabuasehube area ever since. It has now advanced within 40-60km from Nossob on the SA side. And stretches along the entire border between SA and Botswana and is now also seriously threatening the SA side of the Kgalagadi. Camping in Nossob, the smoke is clearly visible during the day throughout the park and at night the skyline glows red on the horizon. Efforts from the Botswana side has been minimal and the fire is forging ahead, destroying fauna, flora and the unique ecosystem. This makes one wonder how much more fauna and flora has to be destroyed, and human settlements and lives has to be threatened, before serious action is taken? A concerted effort is required from both Botswana and SA Wildlife/National Parks authorities and their respective governments to bring this fire under control. They need to consult with Fire Control experts to advise and help.
