Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students and teachers alike have been under a great amount of pressure to maintain their mental health/stress levels as well as keeping their priorities straight each week. Speaking from experience as a student, life has felt like a robotic schedule.

Many students feel as though they are losing themselves and are dealing with an extreme lack of motivation. According to the Washington Post, “Isolation and economic upheaval caused by the coronavirus pandemic are already resulting in a sharp spike in people seeking mental health help” (Amanda Andrade-Rhoades for The Washington Post). This has taken a toll on many individuals, yet has not been seriously addressed by many school systems. Students with mental health issues prior to this pandemic are suffering immensely, as well as students who have developed mental health issues over the course of the pandemic.

My main goal as a student who feels for my fellow peers when it comes to these issues is for our voices to be heard. We rely on breaks to refresh and collect ourselves as well as catching up on sleep, school work, and spending time with family, and feel that the time we are receiving for winter break this year isn’t enough for us to do so. We are usually given more time, and especially since students have been suffering more and more recently with things such as depression, anxiety, body image issues, sleep deprivation, etc, there shouldn’t be time taken away. The break that is currently set in place is far too close to Christmas eve (school ending on the 23rd), and it isn’t enough time to prepare and get organized for the holidays and spending time with family, as well as celebrating stress-free.

We hope you take into consideration elongating our break or at least making the 21st to the 23rd excused absences and no test days.

Best,

Students
