RE: Boston Harbor Islands access for recreational boaters
The Massachusetts Boating & Yacht Clubs Association is concerned about recent loss of access to Boston Harbor Islands National Park marinas. Georges Island historically maintained many slips for members of the boating public which are now restricted to commercial ferries and charter vessels. This long term erosion of access for private vessels is consistent with BHIA operations dating back to 1995. The BHIA is a nonprofit group chartered to advance the goals of the Department of Recreation and Conservation. The DCR and consequently the BHIA have an obligation to the citizens of Massachusetts to manage the Harbor Islands responsibly and to maintain or improve historical access standards.
By signing this petition you are requesting that BHIA, DCR, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts:
· Restore or build dock space inside Georges Island Marina to accommodate 12 private vessels, up to 40 feet in length each, for first come first serve, usage, each day from sun rise to sunset.
· Establish and publish, with input from the public and Massachusetts boaters, a plan for private vessel access to all of the Islands within the Boston Harbor Islands National Park.
