Raul Uppot started this petition to Boston Exam School Admissions Task Force

We need your help to ensure admission to Boston Exam Schools is based solely on merit. Exams and grades should determine admission - NOT race, NOT zip code. Let us STOP judging and dividing our kids by race.

We are the parents of a 5th grader living in Chinatown where last year only 4 seats of 400 were allotted for admission to BLS - Based on race-biased-zip-codes, ONLY 4 SLOTS of 400 allowed for admission. I have warned my daughter that even if she works hard and gets good grades, she may not get in because she is the wrong skin color and lives in a bad zip code.

Sung-Joon Pai a BPS parent and teacher and the Exam School task force are advocating for a 100% tiered system that does NOT use merit and has started an online petition to push Exam School Task Force to uses race, income levels and not merit. Even 20% merit was not enough for them. They want 100% race and income to determine admissions.

Tiered system has been tried in New York and Chicago and has failed. See article about its failure in Chicago - https://www.nber.org/digest/nov16/chicagos-experiment-achieving-diversity-elite-public-schools Let us learn from other's failures and not repeat them here.

Please let the Exam Task Force and mayoral candidates know that in Boston we believe in fairness and WE WANT 100% MERIT. It is fair and preserves the long held  standards of the coveted exam school.

Diversity is achieved by EQUITY IN OPPORTUNITY NOT EQUITY IN OUTCOME. The BPS is expecting $400M via the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief - Use those funds to help the minority and poor students get tutors and help - Let us lift up the minority and poor and not tear hard working kids down.

Anything other than merit will destroy the coveted exam schools.

In America if you work hard you deserve success, independent of your race.

What we want you to do:

1. Please sign this petition. We need your vote before Exam Task Force meeting on July 14.

2. Vote for mayoral candidate who speaks to preserving merit in exam school admissions.
