Why this petition matters

In Boston, low-income, students of color are disproportionately affected by our biased education system. Rather than indoctrinating students, education should be just as diverse as the world we live in. Students have different learning styles that should be represented and normalized in school. The dominant Western-European point of view is not the only perception that exists. Decolonizing public school curriculum would allow things like foreign languages and social-emotional skills to be taught in classrooms. As studies show, charter schools who have more freedom to tweak curriculum saw increased engagement from students of color when introducing ethnic studies. This is a national issue in terms of improving our public curriculum. All students no matter what background, age, language or culture deserve to feel safe and included. Not updating the curriculum leaves us divided, and forced to face the same issues that have plagued our education for many years... The time is NOW!
