On October 28th, 2019 Butters the Squirrel was found after being hit by a car next to the Palmerton Borough Park. From early September 2018 until then I had fed her day in and day out, slowly earning her trust. From taking food and running away, to slowly learning to climb up my leg, finally leading to her rightful place on my shoulder, she became a star and a very unlikely mascot for the local Pokemon GO community.

Through all this time she amassed quite a bunch of followers online and in real life. Many people marveled at seeing such a friendly wild squirrel being close to a human.

Both myself and Butters were interviewed by WFMZ in January of 2019 to bring light to the special bond we shared earning ourselves a TV spot - located here.

The Black Box Coffee Bar & Donuttery featured her on their Facebook page in the fall of 2019 with photos I took of her posing with their squirrel print mugs.

The Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette also featured pictures of her in their Veterans Day print run.

I believe that we should honor the memory of her by further beautifying the already well-maintained park with an interactive squirrel feeding station for members of the community to participate in feeding the many squirrels in the park and help keep them healthy and away from gnawing on any of the electrical wires throughout the park, as many squirrels are inclined to do. If a feeding station isn't in the works, a plaque dedicated in her memory would also bring smiles to all of her current followers as well as spark discussion between other passers-by who might not already be familiar with her.
