Please support Ashland Downtown, Inc. and Friends by signing this petition in hopes that the Ashland Borough Council rescind their vote of May 13, 2015, to remove the landscaping on the islands at the entrance to Ashland.

The Ashland Borough Council's decision is questionable to many. They say their decision is for safety reasons, when in fact, it is a proven theory that beautification including trees and flowers calm traffic. The Council needs to be accountable to US the residents and voters. With the serious problems our small town is facing it makes no sense for them to focus their attention on one of the towns most positive assets.

In 2002, with Borough Council approval, a group of citizens and businesses joined forces to implement a Welcome to Ashland project. Raising $15,000 the group dedicated the Welcome to Ashland sign and landscaping which was professionally designed by a landscape artist. Since that time, volunteers have maintained the areas both physically and financially. In 2006, Ashland Downtown, Inc. adopted the project and added landscaping to the Dr. Hoffman Memorial and have carefully maintained these areas. Their top priority is beautification and traffic safety. The Borough has NEVER been financially responsible for any maintenance or upkeep of these areas. Likewise, The Schuylkill Area Community Foundation maintains and finances the Mother's Memorial landscaping as well as the island which is closest to that location at NO COST to the Borough. These organizations should be applauded.

So, please...make a change with us. Speak up! Pay attention to who you vote for! And make sure their decisions are in the best interest for this community.

Thank You,

Ashland Downtown, Inc. and Friends
