Pedestrian access to the Main Drive residential area is potentially dangerous due to the lack of designated pedestrian crossings connecting Princess Street and Main Drive. In particular for children and elderly, the immediate surroundings of the Princess Street roundabout are a hot spot with an accident waiting to happen.

In its current design, pedestrians and cyclists travelling between Kew and the Main Drive residential area are forced to cross the Wills Street only a meter away from car traffic in the roundabout. Motorists often rush in and out of the busy roundabout, increasing the risk of an accident further.

During rush hours in the morning and afternoon school children walking or riding to and from Kew Primary School or nearby bus and tram stops have to traverse this spot.

When approaching the roundabout from south (Kew Junction) on Princess Street with the intention to turn left into Wills Street, motorists have to watch incoming traffic from the right and may miss pedestrians crossing Wills Street to their left.

The situation could be made much safer if there was a designated pedestrian crossing approximately 10 meters into Wills Street, allowing two cars to exit the roundabout before stopping at the pedestrian crossing.

Not only would such a change make commuting by bicycle or walking safer, it would also encourage more families to allow their children to go to school independently, knowing that one high-risk hotspot is removed.
