During the Coronavirus epidemic firms continue to promote negligence claims against the NHS. Annual claims are around £2.0 billion with past claims still awaiting settlement estimated to be around £83bn. Legal costs are often higher than the negligence award. Whilst it is accepted that there must be reasonable compensation for patients harmed by clinical negligence this needs to be balanced against society's ability to pay. It is perhaps worth noting that in some countries e.g. New Zealand negligence claims are not permitted and from personal experience their service is exemplary. NZ have also controlled their coronavirus epidemic in an enviable .manner. Perhaps we can learn something from our commonwealth friends other than how to play rugby? Whilst the need to reform the way compensation is calculated and to fundamentally change the legal system is well recognised successive governments have for years procrastinated  and failed to come up with a solution. Boris Johnson standing outside No 10 clapping and thanking the NHS for saving his life  does not provide practical help. Now is the time to show real  gratitude,  the government should suspend all new negligence claims until the current system has been reformed. There will probably never be a better opportunity to pressurise the government, please vote.
