In the wake of the covid pandemic, government has announced school closures in areas with high transmission rates (classed as having Tier 4 restrictions). All children are expected to be home-schooled, with the exception of children of critical workers (those working in roles that are deemed critical for essential services e.g. health, education, transport, essential goods supply) and vulnerable children (who are at risk, under a care plan with social services). The government has repeatedly failed to consider children from disadvantaged families; although they have committed to supporting low income families with technology to support children with home-learning, they have failed to take into account the unique needs of working single-parent families. The stress of juggling parenting and work with home-schooling on top is hard enough for a couple to manage together, let alone for a single person who alone bears the burden of providing for their family. There is no room for sacrifice or flexibility when it comes to the work of a single parent - there is no one to share the load with; inevitably the child’s well-being and education will be sacrificed in order to prioritise accommodation and food. This made worse with the limited childcare options available during a pandemic. Putting a single parent’s occupation at risk potentially results in another family needing to rely on the already under resourced and inadequate social housing and benefits scheme. This is absolutely avoidable when there is a capable, working adult in the family who simply relies on their child being at school in order to provide. Understandably, schools are following government guidance closely and unless parents meet the criteria, they are left to deal with the situation. This is an urgent call for government to include children of working single-parents as eligible to continue attending school during periods of school closures. Not simply for compassionate reasons, but for economical reasons. Why needlessly put these working parents’ occupations at risk and disrupt another category of “vulnerable” children’s education when it can be avoided?
