The infection fatality rate (which accounts for undiagnosed cases) for COVID-19 can be extrapolated from the case fatality rate in China (reduced to 52% in accordance with the methodology outlined at https://doi.org/10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2020.25.12.2000256) and applied to the demography of the British population to project an estimate for the number of fatalities.

The extrapolated infection fatality rate predicts over 700,000 deaths in total, a figure consistent with the Government's own projections of "approximately half a million" fatalities in an unmitigated scenario. However, the fatalities skew heavily with age: approximately only 100,000 people under the age of 60 will die.

Limiting the lock down to citizens over the age of 60 would allow those under the age of 60 to return to work/education/training, while limiting the total number of fatalities to around 100,000 deaths. By comparison, 78,000 people die from smoking every year according to the NHS. As the age of 60 years is a demarcation representing 76% of the population, lifting the lockdown for those below this age would enable the population to develop "herd immunity", which must reach 60–70% to be effective.

We must realize that the pandemic is a national security issue as well as a public health crisis. COVID-19 is an invasion force that has robbed us of our civil liberties, derailed our economy and is using the British people as a human shield. We should fight back.

Lifting restrictions on those under the age of 60 would allow the UK to avert an economic disaster and develop "herd immunity" in anticipation of a second wave.
