Why this petition matters

Started by Danny Price

Since 1995, per head of population in England and Wales, recorded stops and searches of Asian people have remained between 1.5 and 2.5 times the rate for white people, and for black people always between 4 and 8 times the rate for white people

Between April 2018 and March 2019 over 375,000 stop and searches were carried out in England and Wales, with only around 16% of those leading to arrests. Meaning that over 300,000 people were stoped based on their appearance.

During Lockdown in London alone 22,000 black males where detained under stop and search.

British athlete Bianca Williams and her partner were pulled over and mistreated by Met Police in Maida Vale on July 4th.

I, myself have been detained under stop and search twice in the same day and unfortunatelly i'm not the only one.

The evidence is clear.

Hundreds of thousands of innocent people are being targeted by police based on their appearance and with no real grounds.

Cressida Dick, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service in London said recently that a number of people stopped without further action this year were previous offenders. This contradicts the rule that Police are not allowed to stop you based on previous convictions.

We would like the government to seriously look into creating a cap for the number of stop and searches allowed to be carried out by police dept per area.

Introducing a limit or a cap would encourage police officers to think more before acting out of what in many cases may be an unconscious bias.

To be clear, It's not about the public vs the police. We are not here saying "defund the police", England and Wales obviously needs it's police force.

This is about taking steps to start eradicating bias that we know exists within the system as well as keeping people safe.

The public need to be able to trust the police force, not resent it.

By the government refusing to address this clear issue of excess with stop and search they are refusing to admit there is an issue within the system.

This is a serious issue.
