Priority COVID-19 testing for front line Care Workers

Jess Wheeler started this petition to Boris Johnson (Prime Minister) and

Imagine you have physical disabilities and complex underlying health conditions and you are dependent on 24 hour support. You have lung problems and COVID-19/pneumonia could certainly kill you.

You have a small team of dedicated Personal Assistants who are your trusted support team. One of them has now been barred from leaving their home country because of COVID-19, one of them is self-isolating with possible symptoms.

You are down to your last two workers. One of them lives in a house with children and one of the children has developed a cough. Your Personal Assistant doesn't have a cough or symptoms but the house must now go into isolation. This leaves one worker to provide 24 hour support, alone for at least 2 weeks. This is the threat anytime anyone in the home of any of your support workers develops a cold. None of them want to leave you unsupported - but none of them want to put your life at risk from COVID-19.

These front line support workers need access to rapid COVID-19 testing - so they can continue to support people with complex health needs, who are supremely vulnerable to the impacts of COVID-19. Community testing of those holding these daily responsibilities must be urgently implemented.

Without this, those who are dependent on support for their daily survival, will be tempted, despite the risks, to ask for support to continue despite coughs, or isolating households. Their choice without rapid response testing for support workers in these circumstances is dire.

All front line health and social care workers need access to priority tests for COVID-19. A recent petition by Rebecca McCauley has nearly 1Million signatures asking for priority testing for NHS front line staff. I am making the case to extend that priority testing to Care Workers/Support Workers/Personal Assistants who provide essential support to people with complex care needs and underlying health conditions - as these people are particularly vulnerable to the impact of COVID-19 and if we do nothing to protect their sustained support, their lives will be endangered.
