It has long and widely been acknowledged that the nurturing of and being among nature yields significant benefits to our mental and physical well-being. During the current Coronavirus crisis, and the "lockdown" enforced by the UK government, gardens, allotments, back yards and terraces offer a haven for everyone, and an escape from the four walls of home, so our own outdoor spaces are more important than they have ever been. Equally, the benefits of gardening are obvious, and is an activity which can be enjoyed by everyone with an outdoor space while helping to maintain mental and physical fitness.

Yet, while the Government permits bicycle retailers (and off-licenses!!) to remain open, it has not added garden centres to the list of "essential businesses" allowed to remain open to the public, subject to the proper and correct controls. Doing so would enable the public to invest in their outdoor spaces, help keep us fit during the crisis, stop the proliferation of the virus, and offer hope to a horticultural industry which otherwise faces imminent ruin without drastic intervention. These are ALL good reasons to petition the government to allow garden centres to remain open at this time.

Please sign  - our mental and physical health, and that of the horticultural industry, depends on it.
