Why this petition matters

Started by Nick Troy

As part of the new Brexit deal a new fishing policy will be introduced.

The fishing industry has done nothing over the last 50 years to protect fish stocks or the marine environment and has shown itself to be interested only in short term profit. It has resisted quotas at every turn. No other industry is allowed to take such resources from the public domain whilst putting nothing back in. At the same time they  have managed to project themselves as a persecuted group. Remember, trawling is not a small local activity. The UK fishing fleet landed 970,000 tonnes in 2018

Political and scientific groups have been unwilling to upset the fisherfolk whilst they have continued to trawl and dredge (effectively plough) the seas right up to our coasts.

Now, when new agreements  are being made, we must introduce bold new policies. If we ban trawling and dredging within 12 miles of the coast  we will

1 provide a huge space for all marine life to thrive

2 provide a space for fish to breed before returning to the ocean

3 Allow inshore stocks to increase for local inshore line fishing and pot fishing

4 Show the world that sustainable policies are not impossible

5 Show our divided country that something positive can come from Brexit
