Sandra Donald started this petition to Boris Johnson and

The objective of this petition is to get Nick Gibb, School Minister to reverse the decision not to review the current school syallabus although 30 cross-party politicians wrote a letter demanding that black historians and leaders be asked to offer revisions to what is taught, as well as new topic ideas.

By doing this he has chosen not to use this opportunity to set out to children already in the educational system and those entering it to understand the historical and current injustices in this country and the role it played in creating racism.

In the recent programme aired on Channel 4 ‘The School That Tried To End Racism’ at Glenthorne School, South London it exposed unconscious racism and white privilege. And a trip to the National History Museum, London explained to the children how slavery was started, the wealth it helped the then British Empire amass and that the slave owners where paid immense compensation sums to end slavery and the slaves received nothing. The children also noted that the only portraits in the museum showing the history of Britain were of white people.

Is Britain to continue to hide the full extent of its history that has resulted in so many ethnic minorities being part of the fabric of this country? It would seem that that is to be the case by wilfully barring diversity from the education system. What is there to be afraid of by showing all the colours good, bad and indifferent about Britain’s history to children growing up in this country.

Britain is a multicultural society and it’s history must show how it became that, if in the long term anything is going to change.
