Gemma Newey started this petition to Boris Johnson (Prime Minister) and

As a part-time university student and disabled mother of two, I find it disgusting that Universal Credit deducts the costs of university maintenance loans, as it is considered an income.

How can a loan be considered income when you are required to pay this back? Payday loans and similar are not deducted but maintenance loans are. Not only that, if you're on benefits and don't claim a maintenance loan, it is still deducted from your universal credit if you're entitled to it. I find this disgusting and damn right outrageous of the government.

Think about it ... it's being deducted from Universal Credit and then when you get a job or become self employed and earn over the thresold, you then have to pay back this loan. So you are paying the government twice for a loan. How is this acceptable?

I want the government to see that they are creating a barrier for those with disabilities; single parents; carers with limited funds and those from working class background on a low income from going into higher education. THIS HAS TO STOP!

I want the universal credit rules and systems to be changed. We need new rules that don't penalise those that require help from the benefits system and want to improve their quality of life by enroling in university.

I intend to take this petition to my local government body as well as going straight to the top! Please help me by signing this petition!
