Tom Hart started this petition to Boris Johnson (Prime Minister) and

The current state of British politics is unprofessional, inefficient, ineffective and based upon raucous insults instead of discussion and logical decisions.

The MPs have little to no experience in the rolls they fulfil, arguably the most important role in each sector. To make up for this shortfall, British political decisions are made by those who can argue and shout the loudest. If Westminster was a professional business it would have gone bust many years ago.

The voice of Westminster is not the voice of the people, it is the voice of the privileged, out of touch and ill informed. Even with a referendum (regardless of the way you voted) your voice has not been heard. They continue to bicker with each other, pointing fingers instead of grouping together to solve a country wide issue.

I propose the following changes should be made to regain a more professional, reliable and trustworthy parliament:

  • Instate proportional representation to lessen the impact of party politics and focus on the individual MPs skills and political stance.
  • Stop the ability for the PM to choose their MPs, MPs should be hired by their actual experience in the sector, rather than their ability in public speaking or the friends they have in high places. (An engineer could be transport secretary, an ex-military officer could be defence secretary or a doctor, health secretary for example). An independent board or public vote should decide this.
  • Instate strict protocol in the chamber, not allowing jeering and insults or statements that do not contribute to fair discussion. Restructure PMQs to be a place of discussion and conversation rather than a swapping of insults and propaganda.
  • Abolish the House of Lords.
  • More frequent referendums on controversial issues, possibly online if secure voting could be relied on.
  • Hold MPs responsible for not actioning or attempting to action policies outlined in their election campaigns.

Westminster should be held accountable for their behaviour. Not a single current MP behaves in a way that would be acceptable in a professional company. Why do we accept this is the people running our country?
