Rishi Sunak announced in the budget this week that 'tampon tax' would be abolished, removing a 5% tax on tampons and sanitary towels.
This does not got far enough to tackle period poverty. Period poverty is when those on low incomes can't afford, or access, suitable feminine hygiene products.
Sanitary products are available in schools and colleges, that opt in, free of charge however they are not available during school holidays and do not help those not attending those establishments.
Contraceptive, such as condoms are available free of charge in England in the hope that those unable to afford to purchase them will still have access to them. Sanitary products should also be made available for all women without charge for the same reason.
Scotland are on their way to making tampons, pads and cups available free of charge to ''any one who needs them''. It is time this is replicated in England.
