Claire Whetnall started this petition to Boris Johnson (Prime Minister) and

Two years ago, on the way to visit my mum in Merseyside from Staffordshire, I witnessed a crash on the M6. I was struck in that moment by the thought that the collision could have so easily affected me and my two children.

We always think it will never happen to us. But in 2019 exactly this did happen to 162,000 people who were injured or killed due to a crash. Out of these, 27,820 were seriously injured or killed. Their fate could have been different if vehicles were fitted with a safety kit. This may have given them a fighting chance before the emergency services arrived. In the same year, there were 225,000 vehicles in crashes, and 35,000 car fires due to fault or a maintenance issue. With more electric vehicles on the road, and batteries capable of causing highly volatile fires, this is another cause for concern.

The threat of death or serious injury has increased in recent times, with traffic volume and speeding increasing, as well as the introduction of smart motorways, which can delay emergency services.

I believe a comprehensive safety kit, that has everything a driver may need to escape a vehicle after an accident or fire, should be accessibly stored under the driver’s seat.

This includes;

Tools for escaping a vehicle: glass breaker, seat belt cutter, fire extinguisher.

To ensure you’re heard if you can’t be seen: pump horn, whistle.

For breakdown safety, especially at night: high vis vest, light stick.

For emergency first aid: first aid kit, foil blanket.

Providing similar safety equipment in new vehicles is already law in many countries, including France, Germany, Belgium, Australia and Canada. It’s time for the UK to catch up and legislate to protect drivers and their passengers.

A sensible place to start is with commercial vehicles as an accident involving these types of vehicle can have a much wider impact due to more passengers. Some 365, 778 such vehicles were sold in the UK in 2019.

I hereby petition Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Transport Secretary Grant Shapps to make it a legal requirement for new as well as used commercial vehicles to carry safety kits.

Please support me and help save lives!
