Kay Priestley started this petition to Boris Johnson (Prime Minister) and

As we start the first day of the England lockdown 3.0 we are again refused access to our gyms and leisure centres. We are being refused our mental and physical health benefits.

As the thousands, if not millions of people will agree, exercise forms a huge mental and physical benefit. Exercise has been proven to reduce our risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, obesity, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50% and lower the risk of an early death by up to 30% (stats taken from NHS website). Obesity is a huge factor in Covid-19 and 63% of adults in the UK are obese which increases the chances of a Covid-19 death by 48%. Exercise reduces obesity and depression by 30%.

These lockdowns are detrimental to our mental health and the rates of depression and suicide is up 20%. Research shows exercise will reduce the risk of stress, depression and along side that, boosts self-esteem, mood, sleep, energy as well as reducing dementia and Alzheimer's.

Gyms and leisure centres equate to only 487 confirmed Covid-19 cases out of 62 million gym visits across Europe and are the lowest transmittable places to attend and the most sterile. Gyms and leisure centres are part of the solution, not the problem! If we are to save our NHS as the UK Government keep asking us to do, then we need our gyms and Leisure centres open. Please do not deny us of our metal and physical health. The repercussions of this are doing more harm than good.
