Peter Thewlis started this petition to Boris Johnson (Prime Minister) and

With each successive nip, tuck, trim and cut to the budget, the holes in the services needed by the residents of Northallerton but the residents of an area as large as greater London, with the downgrading of the Friarage Hospital, Lives have already been lost because of the vast distances which need to be covered before any victim or patient gets to a critical care location.

The Air Ambulances which cover North Yorkshire may be fast and able to get extremely vulnerable patients to any one of five or more hospitals within 20 minutes from a scene but they are not infallible and there are only two of them meaning that from Northallerton, anyone in critical condition will be making a road journey in excess of 20 minutes. With Darlington and James Cook Hospitals emergency departments already at full stretch covering what can only be described as a black hole in emergency medical cover, people have already died because the ambulance service, despite valiant efforts to get at least one person that I've heard of to a hospital with emergency care facilities in time because of a 35+ minute drive, going from Northallerton to James Cook for a drug antidote instead of a 3-5 minute drive from central Northallerton to the Friarage, the overdose victim was apparently alive and responsive as they left Northallerton but rapidly became comatose during the passage in the ambulance, the victim was Dead upon arrival at James Cook despite the crews best efforts.

The Friarage would be the first choice site as it used to be for those involved in Road Traffic Collisions on great tracts of the A1M, A19, A167, A168, A170 and the A684 as well as many hundreds of miles of rural roads, incidents which happen in the area bordered by Croft on Tees to the North (A167), Helmsley to the East (A170), Birdforth to the South (A19 Thirsk to Easingwold), Dishforth to the South (A168 by the A1M) and Bedale as well as beyond along the A684.

On top of the usual incidents and accidents we have the added issue that there are several military sites within the area, this includes the huge area covered by Catterick Garrison and the Army training establishment, R.A.F Leeming as well as R.A.F Topcliffe and R.A.F Dishforth, Both Airmen and Army personnel get injured in training, some severely enough to need civilian hospitalisation at speed, Northallerton is the closest common hospital site that they can be taken to quickly by road or air, therefore The Friarage NEEDS to be reinstated as an A and E and properly funded to provide the best level of cover for not only serious incidents but the whole gamut of aftercare and regular services offered around the periphery of our area.
