Why this petition matters

Started by Mechelle Paterson

There is a lot of bad press about MPs giving themselves (comparatively) huge pay rises while different public sector workers get varying but significantly lower benefits, or even a pay freeze. We are facing a situation where vocations such as nursing and teaching are becoming less attractive and we could soon experience a significant shortfall in staff in these vital areas.

My suggestion for MPs and all public sector workers to have the same percentage pay rise aims to create parity; after all, MPs are public sector workers too. If the NHS staff are only going to get 1% then MP should not be allowed to award themselves any more than that. If the police get a 2.5% pay rise, why can't NHS workers? All public sectors are important and in my opinion, should be treated equally.

I also suggest that some kind of public sector salary and final salary pension cap be introduced as well, to avoid "fat cat" salaries and pensions (eg local government Chief Executive) from continuing to drain public funds at unnecessarily high levels.

If little changes like this could be made, central government would help to restore our faith in the establishment, and redress the balance. The effects would be far reaching, and go some way to making public sector jobs more appealing to potential new recruits.
