Why this petition matters

Started by Poppy Whiting

Homelessness is caused by awful occurrences like the death of loved ones, loosing jobs, domestic violence, divorce and family disagreements. Other problems such as depression, mental illness, post-traumatic stress disorder, and disabilities are also reasons for a large amount of homelessness.

In Southend-On-Sea homelessness has peaked due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021. Although in England there is no exact figure about how many people are homeless, they estimate that over 200,000 families in England suffer from homelessness. People estimate that 66.7 million people are homeless in the UK, and 1 in 200 people in England find themselves living on the streets, with no home or very much food to eat.  Many people rely on the pure kindness of the public.

The government has been investing £1.2 billion a year to tackle homelessness, and last year introduced the Homelessness Reduction Act to ensure people at risk of becoming homeless get help more quickly, with councils receiving funding to support them.
