Year 11 started this petition to Boris Johnson (Prime Minister)

From a year 11 student’s perspective, I as well as many of my peers are under a huge amount of stress from the newly received information that our GCSE’s in May and June have been cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic caused by “Covid-19”.

The solution that I aim to present is to allow the year 11 GCSE students alone to continue attending school as normal in order to continue our education for the further two and a half months left of school. This way we can proceed to complete our GCSE’s as normal without the added worry and pressure due to the current situation. This same idea also applies to the current A-level students who are expected to sit their exams in the early summer as well.

I suggest this solution due to the fact that many year 11 students believe that alternative solutions are not the right way forward as the capable grades will not be achieved by many students who have the full potential to improve within the time period left until the exams.

Although it may put teachers in a difficult position, large groups can be taught at once in the structure of a university lecture therefore making the situation easier for teachers who may not be able to attend due to the current circumstances. It is understandable that many teachers may have difficulties with attending due to their child’s needs however hours can be flexible if necessary as there are multiple teachers that are designated to teach each subject. Teachers with underlying health issues or at a higher vulnerability are not expected or pressured in any form to attend, however we as year 11 students believe that this is the most effective solution during this crucial time.

We believe that this situation is a sensible idea and can be made to work if the substantial amount of effort is put in from both the students and the available teachers. As year 11 students that take their future seriously we are trying to find any possible solution other than receiving predicted grades as the final result due to exams being cancelled altogether. Sitting exams later on in the year will have a butterfly effect which will damage the further education such as A-levels or college courses, creating an out of sync educational system.

We hope we can come to an agreement and make a positive change in order to succeed throughout this difficult time period. All we desire is to achieve what’s best for everyone affected by this change in order to succeed in the future.

Thank you.
