Fund our council - save our services

At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, local councils were told to spend whatever it takes in order to tackle the virus and protect residents.

The Government promised councils that they would be reimbursed for their coronavirus response.

Since then, the Government has provided some extra funding but not nearly enough to meet the cost of responding to the pandemic nor the income that councils have lost as a result.

Tower Hamlets Council now faces a financial black hole of £30m, and this is on top of the savings the council had already been forced to plan for the next few years because of Government austerity cuts to council funding.

The cost of Covid on top of austerity means that Tower Hamlets Council has to find a staggering £60m by the end of 2023/24 unless the Government sticks to its promise to support councils.

Local councils provide some of the most important frontline services to our communities, and the funding gap that Tower Hamlets faces will have a devastating impact on the services that the council can provide.

We call on the Government to reimburse local councils in full as a matter of urgency, in order to protect vital local services.
