Musical theatre BA students across the country have worked for years to finally get into drama school, most of us invest thousands across our lifetime to actually get in and train. Due to COVID 19 a huge proportion of our vocational training has been lost, online teaching for musical theatre and acting is impossible! We are not receiving the training we signed up for, nor are we getting what we pay £9250 a year for (some places charging up to £15,000 with no help with student loans)

It is an injustice that we are losing crucial training that we will never get back! I’m calling for government interception to fund drama schools so that this years 2021 grads are not thrown to the industry with no preparation. I’m calling for a year long retake, drama schools are so different from universities, and being grouped all together is really damaging our education.

It is an injustice to have let new students sign a contract in September 2020, knowing full well the drama schools could not provide adequate training for these new first years. It is an injustice that they have spent less than 6 weeks face to face, and now spend the foreseeable future in their bedrooms, watching their degree flash before them. It is an injustice that our mental health is being destroyed as we watch our dreams shatter infront of us - I’m sure if people had a retake to actually look forward to, mental health amongst MT students would increase dramatically.

The arts have never been the governments priority, but young adults are suffering, young adults are going to be in lifelong debt for training they never received.
I love my school, I love my teachers and they are trying their best, but musical theatre online just isn’t feasible, not always accessible, and is most defineitly not what we agreed to in our contracts.
