Now we have been in lock-down for nearly 7 weeks it is becoming clear that the lack of financial help given to those who are newly self-employed (ie: those who have not yet filed their first Self Assesment tax return) is having a crippling impact.

These are the people that have put their heart and soul and possibly their life savings into setting up a business. In some cases these fledgling businesses were just starting to flourish and then came Covid-19 and a complete halt to their dreams and income.

There was hope on the horizon when The Government announced help would be forthcoming for the Self Employed and then the crushing blow that those of us who have only just got going are not entitled to access the Self- Employment Income Support Scheme!! We were told that we could access Universal Credit which whilst is better than nothing is nowhere near the same level of help awarded to those who have run their businesses for longer.

I understand that as far as HMRC is concerned we do not yet have a tax history but why can we not submit our first Tax Return now and be awarded a grant based on that return?

Surely new start ups are the ones that need the most support in the business world. Many of us may not be able to restart our business once this pandemic is over - it will be too late.

I am starting this petition to ask the Prime Minister and Chancellor to reconsider the newly self-employed and find a way to allow them to access better financial help to ensure that their businesses can survive this crisis.
