Fair Competition for Renewable Tidal Energy at Swansea Bay
Fair Competition for Renewable Tidal Energy at Swansea Bay

In 2015 the Coalition government supported plans for green tidal energy. Government was going to give a subsidy. http://www.tidallagoonpower.com/projects/swansea-bay/3d-model/ Tidal Power Ltd did an environmental assessment and drew up designs and got permission to build. Despite an independent report by Charles Hendry in 2017 showing they are good value as they last 120+ years. Government decided to withdraw all funding and subsidise building 6 nuclear plants instead. The first is Hinkley Point C which was supposed to cost £20.5 bn and now costs £22.5bn https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-09-25/edf-raises-cost-of-flagship-u-k-nuclear-project-warns-of-delay Swansea Tidal Lagoon would cost only £1.2 bn and protects again sea level rise. Without subsidy private investors could fund tidal independently but government is subsidising nuclear at EDF with taxpayer money so Tidal Lagoon can't compete. This is not fair. If they don't want to subsidise green tidal ok, but do not price it out by subsidising nuclear. They are giving French/Chinese company EDF £97.50 per mwh of tax payers' money over 35 years. Taking jobs away from British and Welsh people https://unitetheunion.org/news-events/news/2018/june/swansea-tidal-bay-lagoon-decision-is-a-short-sighted-jobs-killer/ Unlike solar and wind, tidal is predicatable. Why support nuclear? Nuclear radiation causes cancer, mutation and death. Nuclear power stations are easy targets for terrorists. While tidal generators may go on indefinitely and for 120 years minimum, new nuclear plants are designed to be decommissioned after only 60 years and nuclear technology is already out of date now. Few advanced countries want them. There is currently no way to make radioactive waste safe - plutonium has a half life of 24,000 years. Please ask your MP to give tidal the same £92.50 subsidy as EDF and review their national energy strategy.
