The government’s furlough scheme recognises that people can’t survive on less than 80% of their income, however new parents are expected to survive on less than half of minimum wage for 9 months, and 3 months unpaid if they take a full year off work.

Right now new parents receiving maternity pay are financially worse off than those on furlough.

I’m asking for realistic and fair maternity pay, and adequate childcare funding so that parents aren’t financially crippled by going back to work.

I am proposing that:

• maternity leave should be paid at 80% of a person’s income, based on an average from the previous 365 days.
• childcare funding should be available for children aged one and above where parents work a minimum of 16 hours
