A teenage British tourist faces a year in jail in Cyprus after reporting being gang-raped. She told Cyprus police she was raped by up to 12 Israeli tourists in a hotel room in Ayia Napa on July 17. Now she is the one facing jail after being found guilty of 'public mischief' after a judge ruled that she lied to police about the attack.

The 19-year-old said Cypriot police forced her to sign a retraction statement which led to her being convicted. Her legal team insists she was coerced into withdrawing the claim after being interviewed for hours with no lawyer present. She has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The young woman herself has said: “I would say to both the Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister, both of whom are fathers, please support me with your actions, not just with your words. Time is running out for me. Please, please help."

So far the Government has only expressed concern about her plight.

We, the undersigned, call on the Government to issue more than just words and to act urgently.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab should

  • directly intervene with the Cyprus government in the case of the British teenager facing jail there over a fake gang-rape claim
  • demand that she should be brought home to Britain immediately for treatment and support, rather than attend court next week
  • request that she is released from detention immediately and the Cypriot attorney-general discontinue criminal proceedings, removing her from the ‘no-fly’ list so she can return to the UK
