Why this petition matters

After a long-awaited response from management about our concerns regarding tip pool policies, we are again left disappointed and unheard.

As your co-workers, we are asking that you take a minute to sign, and share, this petition with one another.  Your name on this petition will be kept completely confidential from management.

We have decided to use this petition to show that collectively, we disagree with the limited and disrespectful policy options given to us regarding our tips. These are our wages, it is how we pay rent, and it is unjust that they have been illegally withheld since the opening of the restaurant.

With the support of one another, across departments, we can win back our missing tips, and ensure there is a tip policy that is fair for all of us.

Please sign this petition to demand:

1. Management be immediately removed from receiving any wages from the tip pool (this includes administration, salaried staff, management, and owners);

2. All decisions regarding policy and procedures of tip pool are to be determined by the employees at B+B (excluding management).

Background

On September 30th, we discussed our discontent with the current tip pool structure once we were made aware of where our hard-earned tips were going as admin redistributed them to themselves and to managers. We felt that the current model was unfair because management does not do, to the same degree, the same work and that no customer would reasonably believe that their tips were going to management positions that earn a much higher wage than staff who rely on tips to subsidize their lower wages.

During this meeting, staff were asked to:

“submit their ideas but just do it in email, were going to read through all of them, we’ll look at them, we’ll have a referendum if we can present 3 different options, these are the most popular ideas, let’s have a vote, whatever the staff says (...) If staff says ‘this is the most fair, this is the tip pool we want’, management want to the tip pool to be fair and to be reflective of everyone” (...) “It everyone wants to move to a different system, everyone from the ownership crew and the management crew are totally open to it”

Following the meeting, the staff proposed new models via email. One of these popular and group-submitted models asked in very clear terms for the removal of all management and admin from the tip pool. We were told that there would be more information about this referendum on Oct 10th.

Without notice, on November 4th staff who were working on shift that evening received a piece of paper indicating two options to vote on:

1 - All administration hours are removed from the tip pool. Management is tipped out a the same rate as their respected departments. Of the tipped out 6%, ~2% would go to the kitchen, ~2% would go to bar and baristas, ~2% would go to support.

2 - Review further, however I understand that this takes longer to implement.

As staff at Boom + Batten, we feel frustrated and unheard as we wait for a fair system and a fair vote, as we had been promised on September 30th.
