Hello world, I'm Daniel, and I am starting this petition in hopes of both raising awareness about the damaging effects of road salt, and have myself actively contribute to stopping our use of it. Road salt has been a growing issue for many, especially those who are most concerned about preserving our environment. According to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, road salt is not only damaging to roadside vegetation, it can negatively impact our rivers and lakes. This occurs when leftover salt is caught in water runoff and is taken into either the sewage system, the direct river streams, or end up in concentrated puddles that seep into the earth. When this happens, any animals that are not used to having salt in their environment suffer, leading up to their deaths if not handled correctly. Not mentioning the other effects this has on fish, it is one of the reasons why there are collisions with wildlife, like deer, on rural roadways in smaller cities, as the animals are attracted to the salt that is leftover. Collisions aside, any animals that eat this salt end up being eaten or dying, which leaves salt in the system of those who eat them, which is obviously unhealthy.
