This is a petition calling on the Boise City Council and the Mayor of Boise to prohibit smoking in vehicles while minors (under the age of 16) are present.

People should have the choice to smoke or not. But when it has a direct effect on others, it's no longer an individual decision. The City of Boise Smoke-Free Air Initiative recently included two new ordinances which prohibit smoking in many public places such as bars, patios, city parks, the greenbelt, etc. The concentration of secondhand smoke in a car can exceed the concentration in a home or in a bar by 10 to 100 times and children along for the ride are not able to escape it. Kids have no choice. If we're going to protect adults from secondhand smoke, let's protect minors, too.

The effects of secondhand smoke have been proven to be even more toxic to children/minors than to adults, increasing their risk of asthma attacks, ear infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, and SIDS. Containing over 50 cancer-causing chemicals, secondhand smoke in children has been linked to the onset of heart disease and lung cancer in adulthood.

The government has an obligation to ensure that children are in safe and healthful environments. The WHO's constitution states that "the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being..." Children who are being forced to endure these high-levels of secondhand smoke without a choice are not given this basic right.

It's time to give them a voice and keep Boise a safe and healthy place for all of our kids
