Smithfield Bypass Public Consultation o n Suitability of Current Plans

The current plan for Smithfield Bypass is going to cost taxpayers A$152 million and modelling has already shown that the single lane in either direction is already insufficient for predicted traffic volumes. The proposed route will take large traffic volumes close to housing developments and cause air and noise pollution for residents who were unaware of the plans when they purchased building land. The short 3.8km route will divert 2 lanes of traffic at each end into a single lane and will inevitably cause more congestion than it hopes to resolve. Whilst avoiding potential delays at only 3 roundabouts the congestion of daily commuting will merely be moved south to the bottlenecks around the airport and Mother of Good Counsel School. Petitioners argue that the money would be better spent on improved public transport either buses or even light rail or park and ride that would also reduce pollution and be scaleable for future population growth rather than encouraging yet more single person car journeys into Cairns CBD. There is a need to have greater public consultation before construction is finally approved. Bob Manning and Cairns City Council need to talk properly to residents
