REMOVE THE WORD ‘URBAN’ AND REDESIGN BELMONT UNIVERSITY’S YEARLY SHOWCASES

I am calling Belmont University to remove the ‘Urban’ showcase label and replace it with a showcase for each of the genres that are grouped into it.

Belmont University in Nashville Tennessee is known as a musically expressive campus that holds 4 yearly showcases meant to promote and celebrate the talent in the school. The program is outdated.

The four genres are Christian, Country, Pop/Rock, and ‘Urban’. The description of the ‘Urban’ showcase includes R&B, Hip-Hop, Rap, Neo-Soul, Jazz, Blues etc.

Belmont University can be giving black music more space to be seen, recognized and appreciated by the campus and the industry executives who come to these shows by splitting up these genres into two showcases.

Give students a bigger space to show their art. Remove a word that is historically offensive and set the precedent for all other music schools. We have an opportunity to do the right thing and be a leader in this long overdue change in the music industry.
