End HISD magnet defunding

Houston Independent School District (HISD) is pushing to take away funding for magnet schools, affecting hundreds of thousands of children from Montessori to high school (32,000 students enrolled in HISD magnet schools as of 2018). Defunding would be detrimental to the education of the district's Vanguard and magnet population. The schools that would be most impacted include Carnegie Vanguard High School, the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA), Wharton School of Dual Education, and many more. Only 85 magnet schools from HISD will continue to run as magnet programs, most of which are already underfunded. The link to all of the magnet schools in HISD can be found here. Not only would magnet schools become schools of choice; magnet programs in zone schools will be defunded, approximately 33% of teachers will be laid off, and AP courses/extracurriculars will also be defunded. This is critical because AP courses help give schools higher rankings as well as giving students college credit starting from the 9th grade. As of right now, the HISD school board is not revealing any more information to students, parents, or teachers.
