OAK PARK IS A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES LEADER. The Village of Oak Park IL, a regional and national leader in sustainability, made history in Fall 2011 when it approved a plan that was the “first  in the United States to purchase 100 percent renewable energy.” This move earned Oak Park recognition from the US EPA for generating over $3.4 million in cost savings and avoiding 171,000 metric tons of carbon emissions per year (the equivalent of removing more than 25,000 cars from the road).

OAK PARK'S BOARD OF TRUSTEES’ MOVE OF SUPPORT AWAY FROM GREEN ENERGY IS SHORT-SIGHTED AND RISKY. In mid-April 2014, the Village’s Board of Trustees withdrew their support of alternative (green) energy by signing a new agreement for fossil-based (brown) energy. While it appears that energy rates have increased overall, and that the brown plan evaluated was about 4% less expensive than the green plan, we believe any immediate savings from this arrangement will be eclipsed by the greater cost of fossil-fuel-induced climate change and its associated risks. These costs and risks – to property, economy, livelihoods, and lives – are accruing now and projected to increase sharply in the near future. These costs are detailed by the IPCC and the UN in their current and starkest reports yet -- and in mainstream news , including via the NYTimesThe Guardian, and across other media outlets.

OAK PARK'S RECENT REGRESSION TOWARDS BROWN ENERGY IS OUT OF STEP WITH ITS SUSTAINABILITY MISSION. The Village of Oak Park’s move away from green energy and towards fossil-based energy is wholly incongruous with its own approval of and involvement in the Oak Park/River Forest Sustainability Plan, PlanItGreen, and with policies drafted in its own Comprehensive Plan. It is against the recommendation of the Village’s citizen-based Energy and Environment Commission, discordant with  sustainability programming that has occurred for the past 6 years in its Zero Waste School District (District97), and embarrassingly out of step with Gov. Quinn’s recent announcement that the State of IL ranks first in the nation in renewable energy use (Oak Park was listed among 91 green energy communities in IL). In addition, there was no mention of a brown option presented at either of the public meetings on this topic, yielding no opportunity for the public to register its concern before the Trustees’ decision was made.

In light of the above, we urge the Oak Park Board of Trustees to recommit to 100 percent renewable (green) energy.
